Projects- Bellingham

The Task:

Our role in the Farmstead Road development was to construct 24 sensitively crafted affordable homes commissioned by Phoenix Community Housing, based on a design by Metropolitan Workshop. A core objective was to ensure the new buildings respected and enhanced the local character. This was achieved through the execution of highly distinctive brickwork, which deliberately takes cues from the interwar Arts and Crafts heritage prevalent in the surrounding Bellingham Estate.

A critical requirement of the build was its dedication to sustainability and energy performance. This project was rigorously delivered to the Passivhaus Low Energy Building Standard, demanding meticulous construction techniques, superior insulation, and attention to airtightness. The task required navigating the complexities of combining traditional craftsmanship with the technical demands of modern, highly energy-efficient construction.

The Outcome:

The resulting Farmstead Road development is a highly successful example of modern affordable housing that has been shortlisted for multiple architectural awards. The outcome is a scheme that not only provides essential, high-quality homes but also creates a strong sense of place through its elegant and contextual design.

By achieving the demanding Passivhaus Low Energy Standard, the homes offer residents significant reductions in energy consumption and ongoing utility costs, representing a substantial long-term value for the client. The careful blend of traditional patterns and contemporary detailing has resulted in a development that is both architecturally distinct and a benchmark for future sustainable and community-focused residential construction.
